"Later we'll have some pumpkin.." forget the pie!

One of my favorite holiday pies is pumpkin pie, a staple at most Christmas tables. Coincidentally, pumpkin is also a staple in my dog's medical cabinet. Why is a can of plain pumpkin puree a good idea to keep in your stash?
Pumpkin is a fantastic source of fiber and can be a quick, effective remedy when your dog has an upset stomach. It can also help prevent anal gland problems, and pumpkin seeds are a natural anti-parasitic. Cucurbitin, an amino acid, has been shown to paralyze intestinal worms.
Pumpkin is also great for boosting your dog or cat's immune system, as it contains lots of vitamins A, E, and C. There's a host of essential minerals present as well, vital for cellular function. What a cool superfood!
Besides in times of medical need, I also have been known to add a scoop of pumpkin to Phoenix's dinner bowl or put it in a Kong to freeze and let him lick. You can get creative with frozen bites in an ice cube tray - and I will admit I have also offered him guts from carving Halloween pumpkins that he was happy to sample!
What other foods come out during the holidays that are beneficial for your dog? Cranberries? Cinnamon? Egg(nog)?
Shout out to DNM for double-checking my pumpkin facts :)
