Does your cat need more bathrooms than you?

I'm pet sitting for a family who has encountered a common issue in every multi-cat household: cats going outside the litter box.

There are several reasons why your cat might prefer the carpet over the box. My first recommendation is always to visit the vet and ensure that nothing is amiss with the urinary system. If you have an all clear, here are some things you can try:

  • As one of my mentors, Jackson Galaxy advises, the general rule of thumb is to have one more box available than the number of cats in the house. If you have two cats, it's recommended to have three litter boxes available at all times, placed in different rooms. It seems silly, but cats can be very territorial, and answering nature's call is a vulnerable moment.

  • Litter box attractants help encourage your cat to the right place to relieve themselves.

  • Consider the stress level in your home. Cats frequently try to relieve stress by spreading scents outside the box.

  • Try a covered litter box with a door, as large as possible. We all know cats are picky, and sometimes they prefer more privacy and space to move around.

Sometimes small, simple changes are all you need. Have any of these methods solved your litter box problems?
